RuneScape 4 is real as a development project, but RS4 is a working title rather than a confirmed final name. Jagex has announced a new standalone RuneScape MMORPG built in Unreal Engine. There is no announced release date, and the reveal does not offer a playable RS4 build.

This guide separates the announcement from questions that Jagex has not answered. Information was checked against the official RS4 reveal on October 5, 2026. It is an independent explanation, not a hands-on review or an official Jagex publication.

“Not announced” does not mean a feature has been rejected. It means the reveal does not provide enough information to promise it.

What is RuneScape 4?

Jagex describes RS4 as its fourth-generation RuneScape project. The number is useful shorthand during development, but the studio has not committed to it as the eventual product name.

The announcement positions RS4 as a new MMORPG in the RuneScape universe, rather than an update that automatically turns an existing RuneScape account into a new game. Jagex highlights integrity, lasting character progression and development shaped with the community as guiding principles. Those principles explain the direction of the project; they are not a complete feature list.

Unreal Engine is confirmed. Specific versions, hardware requirements, combat systems or launch platforms should not be inferred from that engine choice.

RuneScape 4 release date and getting involved

There is no confirmed RuneScape 4 release date. The official reveal says the project is at an early stage and is still several years from release. Turning that statement into a particular launch year would be a prediction, not an announcement.

Jagex plans to share more about the world, team, game and ways to participate in 2027, according to the current reveal. That is an information milestone, not a promised launch or beta date.

The official page includes a register-interest form. Registering interest is a way to follow the project; the announcement does not say that it guarantees test access. Use the official page for this registration rather than submitting account details to unofficial sites claiming to distribute RS4 keys.

Gielinor and Ashenfall

RS4 is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age. Its starting region is Ashenfall, the landmass first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, to the north-east of Gielinor.

The new adventure is set years after Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Jagex describes an Ashenfall that has changed with time, with an ambition to expand into familiar and new places across Gielinor.

That establishes a narrative connection. It does not establish shared saves, transferable characters, a common server or identical survival mechanics. The teaser also cannot be used to measure the playable world or confirm final graphics quality.

RuneScape 4 vs RuneScape, OSRS and Dragonwilds

The most useful comparison today is each game's role, rather than speculative graphics or combat rankings.

ExperienceRelationship to RS4What players should not assume
RuneScape / RS3

Existing RuneScape MMORPG; Jagex says it will continue alongside RS4

Automatic character or progress migration
Old School RuneScape

Its own RuneScape experience, with a dedicated team and continued investment

That RS4 will replace OSRS or duplicate its systems
RuneScape: Dragonwilds

RS4 builds on technology lessons from Dragonwilds and revisits Ashenfall later in its history

Shared saves or identical gameplay
RS4A new independent MMORPG still in developmentA complete announced feature set or launch schedule

Jagex explicitly says RS4 is intended to sit alongside the other games. The reveal does not announce that RuneScape or OSRS will shut down because of it, and it does not promise that one subscription will cover every experience.

Platforms, combat, skills and membership

The following questions remain unanswered in the official reveal:

  • Which platforms will RS4 support, including any browser version?
  • Will existing Jagex accounts connect to it, and what happens to progression?
  • How will combat and skilling work?
  • Will it be free to play, subscription-based or use another payment model?
  • When will closed or public testing become available?

Treat claimed system requirements, guaranteed console releases, subscription bundles or test invitations as unconfirmed unless a new official source supports them. An Unreal Engine project can support many designs; the engine name alone does not answer these questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is RuneScape 4 officially confirmed?

Yes. Jagex has confirmed a new RuneScape MMORPG in development. RS4 is its current working title.

Will RuneScape 4 replace RS3 or OSRS?

The announcement says it is an independent experience alongside the existing games, not their replacement. Account transfers and other cross-game arrangements have not been explained.

Can I play RuneScape 4 now?

The reveal does not provide a playable version or announce public test access. Registering interest is not the same as receiving a beta invitation.

Can RuneScape 4 run in a browser?

Browser support has not been announced. RuneScape's history as a browser game does not establish how RS4 will be distributed.

Is there an exact release date?

No. The current official statement is that the project is still several years away. There is no confirmed launch day or year.
